How Long Does a 30mL Decant Actually Last? (The Honest Math)

6 min
A single 30mL decant casting a long shadow across a dark surface

Short answer: a lot longer than you think. Long enough that calling a 30mL a “sample” is one of the great cons of fragrance marketing.

Let me show you the real numbers, with every assumption on the table so you can check my work.

Start with one spray

A single spray from a standard atomizer puts out roughly 0.1mL. That is the common estimate, and I am going to use it for everything below. If your sprayer is finer, your decant lasts even longer, so this is the conservative version.

Now the division. A 30mL decant holds about 300 sprays. That is the whole calculation, right there. Three hundred pulls of the trigger.

Turn sprays into wearings

Nobody wears one spray. Be honest about how you apply.

Most people do three to four sprays for a normal day. Two to the chest or neck, one or two more if they want projection. Call it three to four.

Divide 300 sprays by three or four per wear and you land at roughly 75 to 100 wearings from a single 30mL. That is the number that matters, because you do not think in milliliters, you think in “how many times can I wear this.”

Seventy-five to a hundred times. Hold onto that.

Now turn wearings into calendar time

This is where it depends on you, so here are three honest scenarios.

You wear it almost daily. Say five days a week. At 75 to 100 wearings, a 30mL lasts you around four to five months. That is a heavy rotation on one scent, and even then you get most of a season out of it.

You wear it a few times a week. Two or three times. At twice a week that is about eight months, at three times a week about six. This is how most people actually wear a favorite, and at that rate a 30mL is a long-term relationship, not a trial.

You wear it in a rotation. You own a few scents and reach for this one when the mood or season fits, maybe once a week or less. Now a single 30mL lasts you a couple of years. It will likely outlive your interest in the scent before it runs dry.

See the pattern. The less obsessively you wear one fragrance, the longer it lasts, and almost nobody wears one fragrance obsessively. Which means for real human behavior, a 30mL is not a taste. It is a supply.

Why “it’s too small to really own” is backwards

The counter wants you to believe 30mL is a trial size and the 100mL is the real purchase. The math says the opposite for how you live.

If you get 75 to 100 wearings out of 30mL, and you rotate scents like a normal person, you will get bored of the fragrance and move on to something new long before the bottle is empty. The full 100mL just guarantees you leave two-thirds of it evaporating on a shelf. You would be buying three times the juice to use the same number of sprays.

That is the case we lay out in full in Fragrance Decants vs Full Bottles: The Math Nobody Shows You. The 30mL is not the smaller option. It is the right-sized option. The 100mL is the oversized one.

What actually affects your number

A few honest variables, so nobody feels misled:

Concentration. An eau de parfum or parfum is stronger, so you spray less to get the same effect, and it lasts longer per wear. An eau de toilette is lighter and you may reach for an extra spray. Not a huge swing, but real.

Your spray habit. A heavy hand who fires off six to eight sprays a wear will obviously go through it faster. If that is you, run the division on your own number. Three hundred sprays divided by your habit is your honest answer.

Storage. Kept cool and out of sunlight, the juice stays good for years. Left on a hot windowsill, any fragrance degrades faster. Treat it like the real thing it is, because it is the real thing.

The reframe that changes how you buy

Once you internalize 75 to 100 wearings, the whole game changes. You stop asking “is this enough” and start asking “why was I ever buying three times this much.”

For the price of one oversized full bottle, you can own three different 30mL decants of the real juice. Each one months to years of wear. That is a rotation, sized to reality, for the money the counter wanted for a single trophy you would half-finish.

We show exactly how to build that in The Smartest Way to Build a Fragrance Rotation for Under $150.

Do the division on your own habit

Take your real spray count. Divide 300 by it. That is how many wearings a 30mL gives you, and it is almost always more than you expected.

When the number convinces you, take the Find Your Signature quiz to see which scents actually fit you, or start a rotation with the ones you already love. Right-sized, real juice, and it lasts.

High fragrance IQ

Own it without owning the bottle.

Same scent, poured from a sealed bottle, in the size you will actually finish. Find your match, or build a rotation for the price of one bottle.
